FOR SALE
PROTOTYPE SHORLAND SB301 (This vehicle
is not homemade!) It is entirely genuine, unique and is the mother
of all the armoured Land Rovers you see in Belfast, Bosnia &
Basrah.
This first prototype for the Shorts SB301 was built
in Belfast in 1968. Based on a 1-Ton Series 2A chassis it was the
personnel carrier version of the Shorland Armoured Patrol Car introduced
in 1965.
Made to look less threatening by dispensing with
the turret, it has a raised roof of thin steel, and an extended
rear compartment. As this prototype was only used for demonstration
purposes it never received the full armour "underwear"
around the engine and much lighter than a normal Shorland. The side
and rear windows are Perspex, rather than armoured glass. The engine
is the normal 4-cylinder 2286 cc.
It was taken to arms show as a demonstration vehicle
and was trialled by the RUC in 1972, as a result they planned to
order 32 production vehicles. It ended up being a runabout around
the Shorts factory complex in Belfast. It became part of the John
Craddock collection, but by the time I bought it in 1990 required
major restoration over a six-year period. It had been abused off
road resulting in cracks in some of the armour.
All the road springs were broken, the footwells,
doorframes, base of bulkhead, and rear cross member were rotted
through. Replacement outriggers had been welded incorrectly, and
it had been converted to RHD, which is great shame, as it is a unique
vehicle. I have put it back to LHD. All the upholstery had to be
replaced with new foam and Dunlop "Trakmark" and required
over 20 litres of glue, it has been painted with the original colour.
It took part in the 1948-1998 Heritage Run and was featured by James
Taylor in Land Rover Enthusiast.
With my other interests I find I have only taken
this vehicle to one show in the last two years. MOT runs until April
2005. Ten years ago the registration number was valued at £595,
but it would be a terrible shame to lose the identity of this unique
vehicle. Open to offers in region of £7,000. Contact Clive
